Jordi,

I appreciate the hope to avoid Xcode, but after thinking over it further there 
are some problems.  For example, many libraries we need under MacOSX are only 
available via Xcode.  For example, the OpenGL an GLUT frameworks are only 
available via Xcode (at least that is my understanding).

Perhaps it is prudent to make a first pass allowing for Xcode and follow up 
with an effort to remove the Xcode requirement.
