IIRC, fminsearch in Octave is more Matlab-compatible (the options arg
is a struct instead of an array). I can't speak for the optim package,
but I suspect the one in the package can be dropped, as long as it is
only after 3.8 is officially released.

There are other functions in a similar status. What will be the fate
of the entire java package? The ellipj, ellipke, erfcinv, and expint
functions have already been deleted from specfun since it doesn't
release often, but now cannot release until Octave 3.8 is out.
