Ben,

I found a deep problem with the set() command not working.  I filed a bug
report here (https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/index.php?40005) and hacked up a
solution which jiggles the position property to force the colorbar axis to
be redrawn (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/95bfa04ab514).  So,
for now, colorbar demo #24 is working again.
