We found the following to work: delete the gnulib-hg directory, add
the following to .hg/hgrc

[subpaths]
.*gnulib-hg = http://www.octave.org/hg/octave/gnulib-hg

and then do hg update

Why that works I've no idea.

Compilation ends with the following error :
Making all in scripts
make[2]: *** No rule to make target `audio/@audiorecorder/susbref.m', needed by `all-am'.  Stop.
