Trouble intalling Octave

Hello,

I've recently downloaded Octave-Forge (v3.6.4) for my laptop, which uses
Windows 8 OS. I've managed to get Octave working, in a sense, but there's no
command window and no 'File'' option in the menu bar. Here is a picture:

Three warnings appear soon after start-up (shown in the picture). These are:

/1) warning: gmsh does not seem to be present some functionalities will be
disabled

2) warning: dx does not seem to be present some functionalities will be
disabled

3) warning: function
C:\Octave\Octave3.6.4_gcc4.6.2\share\octave\packages\statistics-1.2.0\fstat.m
shadows a core library function/

Not only this, but when I close the program, a window appears saying
'Octave.exe has stopped working'. I've read that Windows 8 users have had
difficulties installing Octave, but I followed the instructions from here
http://wiki.octave.org/Octave_for_Windows as closely as possible. Please ask
if more information is needed.
