Just tried cross-building with latest mxe-octave checkout (still at rc1 but
that label is easily patched).

Failed for me in cross build.
My guess is src/Makefile.am needs a patch like attached (I am trying it now)
- if correct, it will need to get pushed into the octave repo for the next
rc.
