my biased summary of the slashdot reader comments: the niche for octave lies
in matlab compatibility, given the large pool of engineers trained in matlab
at college. outside of that narrow niche, octave compares unfavorably to
other open source alternatives, such as python and scilab, in terms of speed
and graphical user-friendliness.
