Since the problem is that automatic broadcasting is not matlab compatible,
the attached patch will throw "Octave:matlab-incompatible" warnings if
the feature is used.  It will also keep on issuing "Octave:broadcast"
warnings (which get deprecated and off by default).

The "matlab-compatible" warning is much better suited for users that
accidentally use Octave syntax in their code (at the cost of making Octave
almost unusable since Octave itself is written in Octave).
