Have you ever looked over “preview-latex”, which is part of AUCTEX?

AFAICS preview-latex is emacs specific and it uses the "preview" package to have latex engines produce one object (e.g. math formula) per page so that dvipng can then do batch conversion and produce one image file per object. This leaves you with the task of extracting pixels from each file and displaying them on-screen. It doesn't seam so different from a past (forgotten? abandoned?) GSOC project .
