Follow-up Comment #1, patch #8468 (project octave):
The second patch is composed of four atomic changesets:
1 - the proper built-in function checks if fid is valid instead of relying
on <0
2 - if, when using start, a homonymous file already exists, then ufl
errors out
3 - the function makes sure that a file with lowercase .ufl extension is
opened
4 - after calling ufl end the file is compiled
