I made a few more changes, added a commit message, and pushed the patch here:

I did this rather than waiting until the patch is "perfect" because in my
experience, waiting for that will mean that the patch will never be pushed.

For me, the most obvious thing that needs to be fixed is to bring up the
widget as a tab along with the command, editor, and doc browser windows, but I
don't know how to do that.

I'm going to close this patch as done.  Additional work can be tracked on the
bug tracker or maintainers mailing list.
