Follow-up Comment #1:

I committed the second part of the patch, to add a new -ddumb device to print.
 I didn't change the creation of images for the documentation because I think
it makes more sense to say that the image can't be displayed then to try and
render complex images with ASCII art.

part of the Octave 5.0 release scheduled for release early in 2019.
