# Dara Adib (Daradib)

# September 27, 2009
As a member of my school district's technology committee, I advocate
free software as public software for public education[1]. Before the
start of this school year, I successfully convinced and helped the
district install OpenOffice.org, Mozilla Firefox, VLC media player,
Stellarium, and Tux Paint on all school computers (the computers are
imaged), the first exceptions in a network dominated by proprietary
software.

I finally obtained administrative approval for the school technology
club[2] which I organized last year. The club is specifically focused
on the freedoms of technology, as our bylaws[4] state:

> CHSN Tech Club shall be organized to promote technology as a tool for
> experimentation and learning at Clarkstown High School North, with an
> emphasis on Free/Libre Open-Source Software (FLOSS), Free Culture,
> Free Formats, and the GNU/Linux operating system.

A brief, one-page summary of the club is available.[3]

And of course, I'm using free software: Debian testing (with
linux-libre).
> $vrms
> No non-free or contrib packages installed on DARADIB! rms would be
> proud.
(DFSG put aside, hahaha...)
