MentalRay and EXR
As far as I recall, MR comes with an extensive API,
because all shaders are C-Code as well.
There's a book written by the makers. Unfortunately I
cannot reach it today. But I surely know, they can
natively export float32 files that can be converted to
more compact EXR.
Maya and EXR
Yes, the Maya API is very tight and its Export is not
documented. There was a time, when you could export
MIFF (Maya IFF Files) with 8, 16 and "32"float per
channel. They dropped "float" from their UI but maybe
you can still reach it by MEL-commands.
One can find a working MIFF-reader (limited to 8bit?)
and as far as I recall also one for MentayRay(.ct*) in
the open source project
http://matterial.sourceforge.net/mflip/ and use it to
build an EXR converter. I'd love to do this, but just
became father and are overwhelmed by work and family ...
