I ran into this running redhat 9 using gcc 3.2.2. I was able to get around 
this issue by compiling using the gcc-compat package (gcc 2.96). It seemed to 
me that this was a compiler bug introduced sometime after 2.96 and seemingly 
fixed with 3.3.
