[Openexr-devel] Combustion Plugin

Dear Brendan, Paul and Florian,

Thanks for your reply. As it turns out, combustion can read OpenEXR only, it
does not output this file format.

Jon Carroll from the combustion user forum writes:

There is no SDK available for Combustion to write file I/O plugins, but the
OpenEXR source works for output... Digital Fusion, Lightwave, and a few
other apps can all input and output EXR.

Hi to all openexr users,

Has anyone written the source code for an OpenEXR Combustion plugin,
supported on PC?

Does Combustion support Photoshop format plug-ins? They claim to
support at least some form of Photoshop plug-in.

If so, you can use the existing one, naturally.

Hi, Darrel (and Brendan),

combustion has limited support for Photoshop file format plugins, but
the OpenEXR plugin won't work in combustion. If I remember correctly,
combustion emulates Photoshop version 2, and the OpenEXR plugin
requires Photoshop 5 or higher. To make a plugin that worked with
combustion, someone would have to strip out all of the Adobe Dialog
Manager stuff, as well as the advanceState callback, and probably some
other stuff.

Of course, if you did this, you'd be left with a plugin that sent
quantized integer pixels to a floating-point program, which would be
less than ideal. You'd really want to create a special plugin for
combustion. Unfortunately, I don't think that Discreet ships an SDK
that lets you do this. I remember talking to some Discreet engineers
about this possibility a few years ago, but that project didn't end up
going forward. Perhaps someone more familiar with combustion can
elaborate further?

- Paul

A data sheet from a german reseller's web site claims that
combustion 3 has built-int support for OpenEXR:

     http://ah-datentechnik.de/down/combustion3_flyer_en.pdf

Discreet's japanese web site also mentions OpenEXR:

     http://www.discreet.jp/products/combustion3/feature.htm

However, the combistion 3 data sheet from discreet's English
web site doesn't mention it. You may want to ask discreet
directly about OpenEXR support.

Florian
