I had this problem too.  I found a workaround in the mail archive at this link:

Although that poster was running FreeBSD, this fixes it for me on Alpha Linux.
To try it, edit pan/Makefile and remove the -Wl,--export-dynamic switch from
the GTK_LIBS
line in the makefile and then delete the pan executable and run make again. 
You don't have
to rebuild completely, just relink.  I don't know why this fixes it.  It does
change the binary in
some way.  On my system they are different in size by about 60K.
