Did you update via rpm or from source? If you upgrades from RPM, did you install the XFree86-75dpi-fonts and XFree86-100dpi-fonts packages? You should probably have all of these: XFree86-4.2.1-3mdk XFree86-libs-4.2.1-3mdk XFree86-xfs-4.2.1-3mdk XFree86-100dpi-fonts-4.2.1-3mdk XFree86-devel-4.2.1-3mdk XFree86-server-4.2.1-3mdk XFree86-75dpi-fonts-4.2.1-3mdk Note 4.2.1 is the latest version available now.
First, I'm sorry that I've posted on the same topic that was previously discussed last week (I trust too much Google...), I promise to do a little more research next time!
Yes, I used RPMs. They were all version 4.2.0. But a Google search showed it is not related to Pan; it seems that the Mandrake packaging of XFree86 4.2.0 misses the Lucidux fonts, although they are the default Sans fonts; similar problem were reported about garnome. I upgraded to 4.2.1, and everything works OK (except the fonts are ugly, but that's another problem...).
In another mail, Charles Kerr noted that it is related to pango, so it seems that pango tries to load the default xfs font, even if custom fonts have been defined (or is it xft? I'm lost with the way X handles font).
Thanks for your help, Philippe.
