Thanks very much, John. I managed to resolve the Gnome applet problems by
installing many of the Gnome 2.1 components I found among the Redhat 8.1 beta
(phoebe) archives. I've created quite a "Frankenstein", I suspect, but at
least all of the Gnome apps I use now work.
