My impression was that the use of the M key was to mark a selected group of messages as read. When I read a message it is automatically marked as read. But of course, selecting a group of messages does not automatically "read" them.

I have another question involving reading messages. Right now, I'm
using 'N' to go to the next unread article and 'M' to mark the article
as read once I've read it. I don't see a way of allowing PAN to
automark messages as read, or even to reassign key shortcuts. Am I
doing this the easier way?

I've never marked a message read after reading it. I've always been under
the impression that PAN automarks everything as read once read.
