This is a new bug, see
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=117516

The action which consists in deleting all articles in a group shouldn't
take much more time when this group is loaded in the header pane

Although the latest release seems to have improved things in this case,
i still chose to file this defect as a 'bug', not as a 'feature', because
deleting all articles in a groups is still a pain in the ass to me.

Let me tell you about the following situation, and tell me wether it also
happens to you:

I'm used to visit regularly the groups a.b.s.mp3.classical,
a.b.s.mp3.blues and a.b.s.mp3.jazz, each of which having over 200k articles
in my news server. During two weeks or so i may only visit a.b.s.m.classical,
then come back to a.b.s.m.blues ; at this point i should begin with downloading
the
newest headers in this group.

But in this case i know that it would involve:
  - loading the 'blues group into the header pane
  - refreshing the header pane
  - suppressing the oldest articles
  - refreshing the header pane
  - downloading the newest articles
  - refreshing the header pane
which takes ages, especially when there are 50k old and 50k new articles
over 200k or so. Practically i know that it is often quicker to delete all
the 'blues articles, then to ask the server to get all the existing articles
in the group

The trick is that currently, for the deletion to be quick, the group must not
be loaded into the header pane, which is quite boring to achieve. If the group
has
already been loaded i have to:
  - select several other groups in the groups pane in order to 'unload' it
  - select the 'blues group avain from the groups pane
  - choose the 'delete all articles' option

Cheers,
Nicolas
