Thanks for the tip. The problem reared its ugly head again today, and
when I checked my .pan directory, the files you mention were missing:

I copied giganews_unsub.dat.bak to giganews_unsub.dat and
giganews_unsub.idx.bak to giganews_unsub.idx, then restarted pan. I don't
know what's causing the files to be "eaten"; I haven't had any problems
with pan crashing, nor am I having any system or HD problems.
