Supersede replaces an article with a new one.  Cancel posts a control 
message telling servers to ignore/delete the original post.

However, it's up to the server whether they honor either of the above.  
Cancels are often ignored, because they can be and often are faked as a 
DoS (denial of service, deleting the posts) on a group.  Supersedes 
similarly are often used as an attack to post either spam or random junk 
in place of the original message.  Thus, many servers choose to ignore 
them.  Basically, once you post, you must consider it out there and 
archived for all eternity.

However, if it was the first post to a new group/list from a new address 
at gmane, you're in luck, since if I'm not mistaken, it only keeps the 
last one, throwing away all previous attempts, until you confirm.
