It appears as though the configure script for Pan may need some tweaking. It did not auto-detect the architecture of my system (64-bit Athlon) and would only compile once I installed the i686 version of gmime-devel. I just checked and while I can't swear that it would have worked without the .i686 version of gmime-devel, I was able to get the tarball to configure when I specified --target=x86_64. I'm not a programmer, and don't pretend to play one, but maybe someone can tweak the configure script?
The 'configure' script is generated by running the 'autogen.sh' script in the top directory of the pan source tree. Before you can run 'autogen.sh' you must have the autogen package from gnu: Homepage: http://www.gnu.org/software/autogen/ Description: Program and text file generation I don't know what other linux distributions call that package, but I'd be very surprised of yours doesn't already have one. Maybe you already have autogen on your machine. If 'sh ./autogen.sh' succeeds, you most likely do have it :) Your freshly customized 'configure' script should make better choices than the pre-fabricated one included with the pan tarball.
