The special mydir value ... creates working directories under
~/.parallel/tmp/ on remote computers. These directories will all be
removed when --cleanup is additionally supplied.

The special mydir value . uses the current working directory. When
the current working directory is beneath your home directory,
the value . is treated as a relative path. Remote computers
use this relative path to transparently correct for differences in login
names and absolute home directory paths across systems.
