yes, touching the file would be a work-around, indeed.
I can shift the responsibility to delete all those zero size files also 
to the next processing step.
Nevertheless, in my opinion, it would be a somewhat cleaner solution not 
to rely on 'fake' files but explicitly tell parallel what's happening.

I'm not sure I understood your proposal:

Did you mean 'have an additional flag to switch between return 
behaviors' or changing it in general?
I would be opposed to the latter, but would certainly see the former as 
a useful addition.
