yes, touching the file would be a work-around, indeed.
I can shift the responsibility to delete all those zero size files also to the next processing step. Nevertheless, in my opinion, it would be a somewhat cleaner solution not to rely on 'fake' files but explicitly tell parallel what's happening.

I'm not sure I understood your proposal:
But we can ask the users if they would like the --return(-file) to
mean: Return a file if it is there, otherwise do nothing.
Did you mean 'have an additional flag to switch between return behaviors' or changing it in general? I would be opposed to the latter, but would certainly see the former as a useful addition.
