I've read a bit about this issue in [1] and [2].

In [2] the resolution was, for system headers, as follows:

       * config/i386/xmmintrin.h: Change all static inline functions to
       extern inline and add __gnu_inline__ attribute.

While this would solve the issue we can't modify gnulib. (people from lkml also 
took that way to solve the issue)

Maybe it's time to define a pdf_list_inline.h (static-inline version) for use 
inside the gnupdf library and leave pdf_list.h for the public API (non-inline 
version).
