have you tried angles email?  Is it timing out or is it giving some other
error?

I find phpGW to be very tedious to use to delete things out of Trash, but I
like to keep things in there for a while just in case.  I usually use a thick
IMAP client to clear it and my Sent folder about once a month or 2, though I
still have over 2000 message in trash right now and it will open, slowly.
