Weve been working on pdf.... its pretty cool as of now (we used it for
an internal CRM app), what i think though, is that we will still need
some way to describe the outgoing documents and tailor them..... in
comes XML+XSLT ... 

If we have XML to describe all data in phpgw, then the user would only
need to write an XSLT to make a resulting XML that would be fed into the
pdf or oo.o rendering engine. This XML would have to respond to a
specification decided by the engines authors ....

Another (cooler, extremely complex, non-php ready) way to do it is with
xsl-fo...a new standard that more or less implements PDF in
XML+XSLT+XPath.
