A few questions:

what version of phpgw are you running?

what phpgw apps are you running?

what is the specs of the box you are running phpgw on?

what other services are active on the box

what other groupware apps are you comparing phpgw to?

This may help us identify the issue with your install.

Cheers

Browser: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0)

Mandrake Linux 9.0
Apache 1.3x / MySql / PHP4.0 (as supplied with distro)
AMD Athalon system

After a few minutes of use normally on selecting a new
application or submitting a form system slows to a
crawl, lots of disk activity (swapping?) usually
apache return a time out message. Can then take many
minutes to shutdown and reboot.

Running other LAMP groupware applications for
evaluation without issue alongside PHPgroupware.

Apache logs don't reveal any errors.

Eventually when shutdown process stops DM / SMB / NMB
machine speeds up again and reboots succesfully. This
behaviour not triggered by any other application to
date web based or other.

TIA

AK
