I think the term to which you are referring is a "Bill of
Material". The time it takes to acquire all parts/materials
for the finished good (and subsequently assemble them) is
called the "lead time". Those would be very nice additions
to phpgw, but I would suggest it as part of something a bit
larger in scope. Like an entire open-source material
resource planning system.

Hi!
I have been evaluating phpgroupware for a while now and
one thing that would be very nice to have is an
extension to the inventory module: support for item
structures and manufacturing (or whatever the correct
english terms are).
If you don't know what I mean I will try to explain: I
want to manufacture for example chairs. They consist of
legs, seat and backrest all of which I would enter into
the current inventory module. Then in the suggested
extention module I would tell phpgw that the item
"chair" consists of one "seat", one "backrest" and four
"legs". This information is only entered once (can be
edited later, of course).
Whenever I want to manufacture a number of chairs, I
would like the system to hiearchichally look into the
structure tree and tell me if I have enough subproducts
(and how many I need to order if there isn't enough).
And when I have manufactured, lets say, 10 chairs and
tell the system about it, it will reduce the number of
seats and backrests by 10, and the number of legs by
40. And, of course, increase the number of chairs by 10.
It would be very nice if the subproducts can have
subproducts by themselves (almost a requirement if it
is to be really useful) and that the system has support
for hierarchichal examination of the stock situation,
for example the seat may consist of a piece of wood,
some stuffing and cloth. Then the system should
discover that when we want to manufacture 10 chairs and
only have 7 seats, we use those 7 and need to make
three more (and maybe order more cloth, for example)
Then there is of course the time factor to consider,
but that is maybe too much. The system could be aware
of how long it takes to get a specific item, and tell
me when I need to order material in order to have 10
chairs ready by thursday next week.
What do you developers think? Is this something that is
possible to include in phpgroupware?
Thanks for your time.
Cheers,
/Ted
