Sorry for being late, I just noticed this thread.
There's an R-package, ggplot2, which relates heavily and explicitly on the
grammar of graphics (hence _gg_plot2). The package is published on CRAN,
Author is Hadley Wickham (www.had.co.nz), who is also working on a book on
this topic. He may either have useful tips and hints regarding the legal
stuff, or be interested in a discussion, so it may be worth a try to contact
him.
