You were right. The problem was my botched pkg-config *.pc's, strewn
haphazardly around /usr/lib/pkgconfig and /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig.
I wasn't bothering to look at pkgconfig because the linker error about fpsetmask
seemed much easier to identify.
