Here's one more idea: try the 0.4.2 snapshot and configure it
--without-gui. (You said you dropped back to 0.4.0 because of
the GTK+ dependency.)

Only wimps use tape backup: _real_ men just upload their important stuff
on ftp, and let the rest of the world mirror it ;)
