[Qemu-devel] Open Source, Closed Source and some compassion

Everyone here should have some compassion for Fabrice.

He has generously donated his time and his talent to bring this
excellent piece of software into existance. There are numerous
companies that have been taking his work and selling it under their
name without compensating him, or in some case even mentioning it is
his work.

As I see it, part of what he is doing is making sure that the Open
Source version has better performance than the knock-offs that are
being sold. After all, since they cannot re-compile his binaries,
those binaries end up being like fingerprints (and illegal ones).

Use the real QEMU and you can use Fabrice's accelerators. Use the
knock-offs that are not compensating Fabrice and you get no
accelerators. Want to sell the accelerators? License them from
Fabrice.

For what it's worth, I think he is doing the right thing by sending
this message to those who would exploit his work without consideration
to him.
