I used a precompiled binary that is on the google for installing a full opensuse 10 and made a 7gb qcow with no problem at all.

However,
try to do a dd=/dev/zero to grow the qcow first or so.

just, are you in NTFS xD?

Vista is well known for their problems on formatting step with a
variety of emulators.
In their developer's page they say to format the virtual disk first
with XP for use of vista under VPC.
