Yes, I do similar at the moment.
I just boot the windows guest session and use eraser or winhex to erase free space and then
recompress with qemu-img.
For ext2/3 I use a kernel and utility initramfs I knocked up and then run zerofree on the partition.
That works nicely.
I'll investigate ntfswipe as that sounds like it might help me make a fully automated re-compression
utility.
