I posted this a while ago and nobody responded.
I found out what the problem is:

If you use Debian's 2.6.21 kernel and modify it to
turn *off* paravirtualization (to be able to use the
nvidia closed source driver) and compile kqemu with
that, qemu hangs solid on start.

If you instead leave the kernel alone and modify the
nvidia driver installation and Debian's kbuild-2.6.21
then everything is OK.
