Ordinarily I'd suggest that for any open source project you can just
read the "INSTALL" file or "README" file for instructions, but having
just checked I see QEMU does not have an INSTALL file and the README
is mostly useless. Sigh.
About the only docs I can find on building QEMU are these:

If you only want to build one particular architecture (eg x86_64),
then my recommendation is:
./configure --target-list=x86_64-softmmu --prefix=$HOME/usr/qemu-1.0.1
make
make install
Then you can run it
$HOME/usr/qemu-1.0.1/bin/qemu-system-x86_64
