This should be a return. Otherwise a non-pattern "line_buf" will always raise
the warning below.

I still think that merging the pattern and non-pattern logic in a single loop
makes the logic a little hard to follow, thus the lingering bug (I'm quite
tired, so my brain could just be broken).
