If you have root access, check the scripts in /etc/gdm/Sessions/.  Most will 
just say

        exec <PATH>/XSession fluxbox

Create a new one (must be executable permissions) called Ratpoison which does 
the same.
PS: Xsession doesn't really do much except load .Xmodmap and .XDefaults 
(.XResources?)
