Ok, I built 1.4.5 from sources on the web page.
My laptop has 1280x800 resolution, my monitor has various resolutions
up to 1600x1200.

The problem can be simulated like this:
1. restart X - both laptop and monitor are switched on, monitor is
switched to resolution 1152x864
2. log in, ratpoison is started
3. I switch monitor to 1600x1200 and turn laptop LCD off via:
xrandr --output VGA --left-of LVDS --mode 1600x1200
xrandr --output LVDS --off
4. monitor resolution is actually changed to 1600x1200 but ratpoison
does not cover the whole screen, I guess it keeps 1152x864
5. restart ratpoison via :restart and everything is fine
