Hi again!
I finally discovered the cause of my problem. Although I previously did not mention it, I was using SLIM as my login manager, and in slim.conf I had the option "hidecursor" set to true. This option enabled was what caused the disappearance of the mouse cursor in some situations but not in all. The option is set to false by default, but I must have enabled it a long time ago, and due to lack of a better description of what this option does or due to my carelessness I must thought that it pertains only to the mouse cursor that might be shown in SLIM but not in any DEs or WMs. My mistake... I discovered this when I launched Ratpoison by using the "startx" command instead of via SLIM and noticed that the mouse cursor did not disappear. Further search on Google, this time with more relevant keywords, led me to a topic on the Arch Linux forums about this problem - https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=58290. In the end I want to apologize for bothering you all with a problem caused by my own fault and at the same time thank Daniel Maturana and Ingo Krabbe for their assistance.
Good luck and happy further usage of Ratpoison!

I have recorded a video with xvidcap that shows what kind of problem I
am experiencing. It is available for download in the following link:

I'm sorry about your problem, but I still can't figure what might
happen, as ratpoison actually never touches mouse cursor visibility.
For example the "banish" command does not hide the mouse cursor but just
moves it out of the way.

On the other hand ratpoison not always answers as expected as it just
implements a subset of window manager features.

The only similar behaviour I can see here is, that the cursor hides
during typing in a terminal, which I switched on as I wanted that.

With nvidia-settings there are some options for "Hardware Cursor
Shadow", that might affect mouse visibility. Also there are some theme
packs that install mouse cursor images, that might not work always. But
I haven't seen such a behaviour before.

Try "tmpwm" to switch into another wm temporarily and see if that
restores your mouse cursor.

I will try to install deluge and liferea to see if I can reproduce your
problems.

bye ingo

Hi!
Although I have used Ratpoison only for a short time I have to admit
that I quite like it. Everything works fine except there is one glitch
and I hope that you can help me fix it.
When I launch programs like Deluge and Liferea (and some other) my
mouse cursor disappears. I can highlight, select and click on things
but only blindly. When I press Ctrl-T the mouse cursor shows up (as a
box instead of the default appearance of course) but if I cancel this
mode it again disappears. In other programs, e.g. Firefox, the mouse
cursor shows up fine and does not disappear. But when I am presented
with a file download location selection window in Firefox the mouse
cursor again disappears.
I have searched on Google for a solution for this problem but could
not find any relevant information. The Ratpoison IRC channel was
fairly quiet on this problem (but I have to admit that maybe I didn't
stay there long enough).
I doubt that this has anything to do with my .ratpoisonrc because this
problem exists even without a .ratpoisonrc present.
If any more information is needed I'll be happy to supply it.

Best regards,
Sergey
