Follow-up Comment #1:
Yes, this error is happening because the destination filesystem (a CIFS
share) doesn't support symbolic links. Fortunately, rdiff-backup preserves
the symlink information in the mirror_metadata file so they can be recreated
on restore.
But for on the backup server, what should rdiff-backup write in its place? A
simple marker file?
