Follow-up Comment #1:

This functionality was added in rdiff-backup 1.1.5. Unfortunately, it was
broken by Python 2.5, which changed the exception class hierarchy.

I have fixed the issue in rdiff-backup CVS and will close this support
request. However, a new release is not imminent.

If you want to test the fix yourself, you can replace the connection.py and
robust.py files with the versions in CVS:
