Thanks for the reply Dominic,
"1: Does the backup which causes the problem come from a source which already
has a subdirectory called 'rdiff-backup-data'? This is a special-purpose
directory for rdiff-backup so there might be problems if it already exists on
the source."
There is no rdiff-backup-data folder (or any folder with 'rdiff' in it's name)
in the source directory.
"2: Are both backup destination locations on the same filesystem?"
Yes, the two backup destinations share a parent folder.
"3: For the backup giving the error message, does the user on the destination
machine have full permissions to create/modify any files/directories at the
destination location?"
Yes, the account has the correct permissions for the destination. I have also
run rdiff-backup -l on the folder while logged in as root on the destination
machine and it gives the same error, if running it as root would matter.
The backup itself actually runs as root from the source machine via the ssh
config file and a 'command="rdiff-backup ..." setup on the destination, so
permissions should never be an issue for writing the files. The files
themselves still have the source ownership/privileges of course.
