Have a look at Smoothwall - it's based on the old VA Linux distro,
which was in turn based on Red Hat.
I'm running it on a 586-100, 20MB RAM, 120MB disk (although 200MB
would be better). It has wide support for old hardware (eg ISA
network card autodetection) and the ISO image of the install CD is
around 20MB, so it's quite possible over a modem.
