I borrowed a Microsolutions Backpack parallel port cd drive from work
today. Once the needed modules were loaded, I was able to mount it on
/mnt/cdrom. I just loaded all the modules, created a link from /dev/cdrom
to /dev/pcd0, and made sure I could install an rpm from it.

Needed modules:
kernel/drivers/parport/parport_pc.o
kernel/drivers/block/paride/pcd.o
kernel/drivers/cdrom/cdrom.o
kernel/drivers/block/paride/bpck.o
kernel/drivers/block/paride/paride.o
kernel/drivers/parport/parport.o

bpck.o is the actual driver for this particular cd drive. Different drives
will of course use other modules. Just throwing out another possibility
for machines lacking a cdrom or network connection.
