Except for all that "ROM" business, it looks like
X was simply not configured properly ("no screens
found") under TinyX and RULE.  I would be curious
to see the XF86Config(-4) file preserved from
this working RH9 install and used with the
TinyX/RULE-RH9 install.  I have never tried
TinyX, though, so I may be completely off here.

so I have now finished this install -
non-rulifeid Redhat9 runs w/o
problems on this HW - well with almost no
problem, the speed is awfully
slow (as expected) but we do NOT have this
strange videoproblem. And I
do not have the smallest idea ... sorry.

Let me summarize:
   0. typing startx after Slinky 0.3.9. install
gives me dark screen on
   *that one* computer (it works on an other PC)

   1. changing the videoadapter-HW (replacing the
card) does not change
   the problem
   
   2. some suggestens from Michael (other
XServer, ...) did not change
   the problem
   
   3. installing RedHat 9 from the CD w/o
Rule-Scripts works!
