We use Smartboot Manager extensively at a project I'm involved in rehabing old machines and distributing them to low income folks (using Linux) and it works great. The only time it won't work is on some older laptops. I've used it with all of the major Linux distributions as well as Windows. Once the kernel is loaded Linux finds the CD fine.

Many of us are using older hardware that does not support booting from a

project that I have used in the past that has been helpful is the
Smartboot Manager by James Su, and details are available here:

The image is also available as part of the Slackware 9.0 distribution,
available, for example, here (or in a similar location on another
mirror):

I have not tried it use it with the slinky iso yet, though I expect to
do so shortly. However, it boots the Slackware 9.0 CD just fine on one
of my older portables that does not support booting from CD. The CD
must be bootable, of course.
